A New Perspective on Representational Problems
نویسنده
چکیده
I argue that current flaws in the methodology of contemporary cognitive science, especially neuroscience, have adversely affected philosophical theorizing about the nature of representation. To highlight these flaws, I introduce a distinction between adopting the animal’s perspective and the observer’s perspective when characterizing representation. I provide a discussion of each and show how the former has been unduly overlooked by cognitive scientists, including neuroscientists and philosophers. I also provide a specific neuroscientific example that demonstrates how adopting the animal’s perspective can simplify the characterization of the representation relation. Finally, I suggest that taking this perspective seriously supports in a specific thesis regarding content determination: the statistical dependence hypothesis.

Aims: From Lufor’s perspective, space is constructed based on spatial operation, recreation and the space in which recreation takes place. This approach is a descriptive view of the relationship between space from a materialistic point of view and its dominant ideas with its dwellers. In this perspective, humans integrate distinct and indistinct data of space and create map-like mental images f...
متن کاملA Critical Visual Analysis of Gender Representation of ELT Materials from a Multimodal Perspective
This content analysis study, employing a multimodal perspective and critical visual analysis, set out to analyze gender representations in Top Notch series, one of the highly used ELT textbooks in Iran. For this purpose, six images were selected from these series and analyzed in terms of ‘representational’, ‘interactive’ and ‘compositional’ modes of meanings. The result indicated that there are...
متن کاملPushing the Envelope: Planning, Propositional Logic and Stochastic Search
Planning is a notoriously hard combinatorial search problem. In many interesting domains, current planning algorithms fail to scale up gracefully. By combining a general, stochastic search algorithm and appropriate problem encodings based on propositional logic, we are able to solve hard planning problems many times faster than the best current planning systems. Although stochastic methods have...

متن کاملA RESTful SWRL Rule Editor
The sparse application of the Semantic Web Rule Language is partly caused by a lack of intuitive rule editors. This applies both from a human user’s, as well as from a software interoperability perspective, as creating and modifying rules is currently hard in distributed Web applications. We introduce a Representational State Transfer-based approach that enables online rule editing to overcome ...
